Why are ultra-processed foods (UPFs) so deeply embedded in our everyday diets—and what can we do about it? The documentary IRRESISTIBLE exposes how the food industry has engineered not only products, but also consumer behavior and political inaction. The consequences for public health are significant, global, and growing. In our panel discussion, we’ll explore how research, policymaking, and public advocacy can address the dominance of UPFs and reshape food environments for better health outcomes. Our international guests will offer insights from science, systems thinking, and political practice:

  • Dr. Yanaina Chavez-Ugalde
    Research Fellow, Centre for Food Policy, City, University of London
    A mixed-methods researcher specializing in systems thinking and policy evaluation, particularly in relation to food environments and the regulation of high-fat, sugar and salt (HFSS) products. She has some years of working experience in food industry before she specialized in Public Health. Her work explores the impacts of UPF consumption on children and youth and the overlap between UPFs and HFSS foods. She offers a systems-level view of food policy and its health implications.
  • Katharine Jenner
    Director, Obesity Health Alliance (UK)
    Registered nutritionist and longtime public health advocate. She led the establishment of Action on Sugar and contributed to key UK nutrition policies, including the Soft Drinks Industry Levy, salt and sugar reduction programs, and front-of-pack nutrition labelling. She brings a practical perspective on advocacy, policy implementation, and the challenges of reforming the food industry.
  • Anna Leibinger (Moderation)
    Researcher, Planetary Health Nutrition Group, LMU Munich
  • Prof. Dr. Peter von Philipsborn
    Researcher and Lead of Planetary Health Nutrition Group, LMU Munich; Chair of Public Health Nutrition, University of Bayreuth
    Head of the BMBF-funded junior research group Planetary Health Nutrition and the Public Health Nutrition team at LMU Munich. His work focuses on global food systems, nutrition-related disease burdens, and policy interventions to improve population health. He brings a perspective on structural causes and policy-based solutions in public health nutrition.
